Built in the 4th century by King Ki Thai, Kamphaeng Phet was a garrison town for Sukhothai. Its name which literally translates as Diamond Wall was strategically situated 100m from the Ping River.
Kamphaeng Phet occupies an area of about 8,500 square kilometers and is located 358 kilometers from Bangkok. The main river of the province is the Ping, one of the sources of the Chao Phraya river. River flats make up much of the east of the province, while the west is mostly mountains covered with forests.
