Floyd Mayweather vs. John Gotti III: Live round-by-round updates

MMA Fighting has Floyd Mayweather vs. John Gotti III live round-by-round updates for one of the most anticipated boxing exhibitions of the year at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico, on Saturday night.

Floyd Mayweather (50-0) and John Gotti III (2-0) are squaring off again after having a wild ending to their last encounter. Their last exhibition was stopped in the sixth round due to excessive trash talking, sparking a series of brawls in and out of the ring at the FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Fla., on June 11, 2023.

It will be the first fight of the year for Mayweather and Gotti III.

Round 1: Mayweather with a quick jab and a hard right hand to start the fight. Mayweather leaps in with another right hand and while Gotti is bigger, he’s also much slower. Mayweather all smiles with another quick combination as he bounces on his feet and avoids any counters from Gotti. Mayweather sticks the left jab in Gotti’s face repeatedly before another huge right hand over the top.

Round 2: Mayweather uncorks a slick left-right combination that snaps Gotti’s head back. The referee pauses the action to warn about punches to the back of the head and things are getting heated again with both corners in the ring. And suddenly there’s a new referee in the fight! Action restarts with Mayweather popping Gotti with another fast combination. Gotti actually connects with a right hand but that’s about the only punch he’s really landed thus far.

Round 3: Mayweather getting aggressive and he starts teeing off with punches as Gotti gets backed against the ropes. Gotti keeps looking at the referee but Mayweather just keeps unloading until he finally backs away. Gotti can’t really do much of anything except chase Mayweather.

Round 4: Gotti comes out aggressive but he just can’t connect with his punches as Mayweather just toys with him. Mayweather digs to the body and then comes back up top to the head with a huge overhand right. Mayweather pawing at him with the left jab and then right down the middle with a hard straight right.

Round 5: Gotti keeps attempting to walk down Mayweather but he just doesn’t know how to cut off the ring. Mayweather easily avoids and then snaps off a combination with Gotti ducking his head trying to avoid the damage. Mayweather with a good lead uppercut and another hard right hand behind it.

Round 6: Mayweather still showing off his speed at 47 and he’s just peppering Gotti with punches. Mayweather with a nasty left to the body and then a stiff right up top to the head. While he’s clearly winning every exchnage, Mayweather seems resigned to just embarrassing Gotti by outworking him and never allowing his opponent to do much of anything in return.

Round 7: Mayweather finally putting some pop behind his punches and he just lets Gotti push him back to the ropes but even then the inexperienced fighter can’t do much of anything. Mayweather just stabbing away at Gotti with rapid fire punches and Gotti’s only defense is putting his head down and hoping for the best. Mayweather just continues to throw a few punches and then wait for Gotti to do something, which he rarely does.

Round 8: Mayweather backs Gotti up with punches in succession, perhaps trying to do his best to end this one. Gotti finally fires back with a hard right hand to back Mayweather off. Mayweather connects with another punch but this one goes to the back of the head and Gotti complains with the referee separating the fighters before things get ugly. Gotti finally bullies his way forward but Mayweather is having none of it. Mayweather with a quick counter right after Gotti gets a little too aggressive for his own good.
