Sukhothai Restaurants Travel Guide

As with all Thailand, some of the best food is to be found sold on the streets of new Sukhothai. Don't be afraid to try food from single cart vendors, as it's cheap and extremely tasty. If you are going to have lunch in a Sukhothai Restaurant, remember that it is served early at around 12 noon, while dinner is usually served from 6pm until 9pm, sometimes until much later. [more]

Restaurants in Sukhothai Recommended for Business

The best restaurants in Sukhothai for business are those that are air conditioned and reliable, which almost inevitably means the restaurants at the major hotels in and around the two cities.

Close to the Historical Park, the Tharaba restaurant at the Tharaburi Resort Hotel offers Thai cuisine in a tranquil setting away from the hustle and bustle of the city itself.

The Sukhothai Resort Hotel is 40 kms from Sukhothai itself but this exclusive resort hotel near the airport has an excellent restaurant serving both Chinese and Thai cuisine. If you need to hold a meeting, the two function rooms can accommodate you and your business associates, before treating them to a tasty meals in pleasant, if somewhat internationally-styled surroundings.

If you can pronounce it, go local and eat at Dvaravati Puttarakkit, opposite the Lotus bungalows at 29 Rajutid Road T.Thanee A.Muang, in new Sukhothai. What it may lack in exclusive decor it makes up for in friendliness and atmosphere, and the food is good and plentiful.

The same can be said of probably the best Chinese restaurant in Sukhothai, the Umphai Pachana. Their speciality is ca-moo, braised pork leg stewed in Chinese spices. You'll find the restaurant down a small street off Charodvitheetong Road.

Restaurants in old Sukhothai Recommended on a Budget

If you are visiting the Historical Park, there's no need to leave your sightseeing for lunch! Just across from Wat Mahathat is a 'food court' style area, where you can enjoy anything from a snack to a refreshing fruit shake. There are also plenty of local restaurants which provide a menu in English if required. As always, look for where the locals are eating, and you won't go far wrong. Some restaurants may be so small that they appear to be private houses, so be brave and take a chance.

OK, that is easier said than done, so start off your culinary adventures at Kuay Diaw Papui, almost exactly halfway along main highway from new Sukhothai to old Sukhothai. Named after the owner, this simple restaurant does its own special noodle dish with pork, pickled cabbage, green beans, peanuts and chili.

Recommended Restaurants in new Sukhothai on a Budget

The best street by far in new Sukhothai for cheap eats is Thanon Jarot Withinithong. Kuaytiaw Thai Sukhothai is a traditional-looking wooden house with a pretty fountain at the front. It serves the Sukhothai version of the popular rice noodle dish kuaytiaw, rice noodles combined with crispy pork, garlic, green beans, coriander, chilli and peanuts in a soy sauce based broth. The Kuaytiaw Thai Sukhothai restaurant is open from 9am to 8pm, so don't plan on a late dinner here.

For dinner by the river, head for the Khun Tanode restaurant beside the bridge at the end of Thanon Jarot Withinithong The Sukhothai fried drumsticks come highly recommended by hungry travellers, and the restaurant is also open until midnight. Or turn Japanese for a night at the Bamboo Café further up the road, where plenty of speciality teas are on offer. If you want to meet a wide range of people over a good meal, book in to the restaurant at the Ban Thai guesthouse on Thanon Prawet Nakhon.

As we've said before, if you want a real taste of Thailand, eat on the street. At the Sukhothai night market, you can eat at a different place every night for a week, and watch your dinner be cooked right in front of you. On Tuesday nights, even more stalls appear in the square at Thanon Jarot Withinithong. Some stalls have bilingual menus pinned up, so the old days of pointing at a tasty range of dishes only to receive a reply like "Po, fi, chi" for "pork, fish, and chicken" are almost gone. Try fish with chili for a lighter dinner with a real kick, or live dangerously and watch what the locals are eating. It doesn't take much arm-waving and smiles to indicate "I'll have what they are eating", and while you probably won't know 100% what you are eating either, who cares. It'll be hot, fresh, remarkably tasty - and cheap.

When Thai food begins to pale (surely not possible?), head for the corner cafe opposite the Riverview hotel. Here you can start your day with a breakfast of omelet and coffee at a very reasonable price. The Coffee Cup just before the entrance to the Historical Park at old Sukhothai will also serve you a decent cup of coffee and a toasted sandwich to revive any tastebuds suffering from chili overload. In the evenings, they also serve good cocktails.

Recommended Trendy Restaurants

It has to be said, Sukhothai restaurants don't do trendy, but they are quite good at oddball!

Top of the list must be the Poo Restaurant, owned by a Thai-Belgian couple, who manage to please almost everyone with hearty breakfasts, toasted sandwiches and tasty Thai dishes. However, they come into their own when chocolate is involved, and any dish featuring the magic brown stuff is going to be very good indeed. It's also worth popping in just to ask about what's on, or to rent a motorbike from someone who understands the phrase "Only half a tank of petrol, please"!

Next is the Dream Café, where the menu embraces Thai classics and European fare from pasta to sandwiches. The café is decked out with Thai antiques and cabinets stuffed with curios and oddities. The owners also sell various 'stamina drinks', which are in small medicine bottles, and promise cures for a variety of potentially embarrassing ills. You have been warned...
