River Kwai

This is one unforgettable place, the landscape is breathtaking, the serene waters of the River Kwai are riveted by the greenest forest which is, from time to time, interrupted by gushing waterfalls and strange rock formations, far away in the horizon the roofs of some distant temple peaks a top the canopy… humble and unassuming river… dresses in ardent orange as the sun sets and the stars ignite the coming purple darkness… emotions fill up your chest and explodes the air out of your lungs! Kwai is to Thailand as poetry is to communication.

Now I know what the monks know for centuries, nature nourishes the soul. Out there in the jungle… surrounded by giant trees or deep down in the heart of mother earth's caves is where one discovers ones self. Visiting Kanchanaburi is not only a renascence for the spirit but an awakening of ones love for nature.

In contrast with the serene natural magnificence, history still lives in Kanchanaburi… we took a trip down to memory lane to the tumultuous past of WWII, thousands of soldiers died building the "Death Railroad" the museums have preserved for eternity the horrors of the war. The memorials are immaculate and the little town of Kanchanaburi has everything you could possibly want and more.

Alongside the Rivers Kwai Noi and Kwai Yai one can find all sorts of accommodations from the basic camp site with tents for rooms to oriental luxury hotels and some distinctive lodges with rooms on treetops. Thai massage and Spas sitting on manicured gardens in contrast with the roughest terrains and idyllic cascading waterfalls defines better what to expect. Adventures down the river encompass Elephant Treks to trips on a bamboo rafts to reach remote underground caves or capturing in pictures the temple tigers or embark in a cultural odyssey when you sing and dance with the Mon hilltribe and more.

There are ancient ruins and Neolithic excavation sites, colourful orchids, delicious fresh mangoes and perfectly designed golf courses, let's not forget savouring exotic Thai curries on a floating restaurant amid twinkling starts and candlelight glow.

Blue Sapphires and World War stories, or tall tales of a floating dragon and the barking frog at night… Kanchanaburi is the mythical land of a thousand smiles and more.
