Whilst the street vendors in Ayutthaya come thick and fast with everything from bottled water to cotton candy to fish and chips complete with bones, quality restaurants must be discovered and explored. Continue reading for a few to discover for yourself... [more]
Siam Restaurant can be found opposite the entrance to Wat Mahathat. A Thai and Vietnamese inspired restaurant, you will find friendly staff and excellent Vietnamese food like grilled chicken on sugar cane. Definitely try the do it yourself option - dough, meat, herbs and vegetables will be delivered to your table and then you can while away the hours rolling for yourself and your dinner companions. With awesome views of Wat Mahathat, plus air conditioning, you might want to eat here just for the well maintained toilets. Cheap, tasty, and comfortable! It opens every day from 10:00 am through until 10:00 pm.
The Pasak Coffee Shop, in part of the Night Market along the pier to the north east of the city, will provide you with a tasty snack stop. Serving both Western and Thai style dishes, stop by to enjoy the bright atmosphere and airy surroundings. Might be a nice little break from the Eastern ruins you've been trawling through!
On low floating pallets, almost low enough to sit directly with the water level, you will discover Pae Krung Kao, otherwise known as The Floating Restaurant. With fantastic views of the passing boats and life by the river, the discerning diner will be treated to a brilliantly fun dining experience. The food manages to be flavoursome, tasty, and inexpensive, offering traditional Thai and Chinese stir fries and curries. Perfect for a romantic dining escape, relax in the Chinese garden with the live music and candles by the magnificent body of water. Open every day from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
If you can spot the tiny sign on the street, then Bann Kun Phra will not disappoint. On U-thong Road, near the wet market, you will discover a fantastic menu with high quality food. Warm, welcoming, and of the utmost quality, you should definitely try the winged bean soup complete with prawns. A fusion of Thai and western style meals, you may still experience traditional Thai cuisine in a well appointed landscaped terrace area. The restaurant has cheerful staff, and the average prices compared to the excellent experience will be sure to impress.
Bannkunpra Hostel has a restaurant attached providing a cosy place to dine by the riverside. With both indoor and outdoor tables available, and tasteful décor on the inside including wooden artefacts and soft lighting, this place provides a taste of home with Western style food (with an Asian flavour) including fried rice, curries, and noodles. Large portions and average prices make this a lazy and fulfilling dining experience.
The U-Thong Restaurant, located in the U-Thong Inn, makes for a more international experience, with Thai, Southeast Asian, and International cuisine influences. Open until midnight, it seats over 200 people. Perhaps a more interesting choice would be the Irashaimase Restaurant, attached to the same hotel, a Japanese restaurant open from 11:00 am to 2:00pm, and then 5:00pm to 10:00 pm.
Sometimes hotel buffets make a scary choice for a dining experience, as they can be so unreliable. However, do not miss the Krung Sri River Hotel buffet. On Rojchana Road, you'll find the food spread over four long tables. From sushi to dim sum, from pasta to Thai classics, there will be something for everyone at this buffet. With a gorgeous seating area in the two storey glass atrium, overlooking the river, this eating experience makes the pricier cost well worth it. Eat to your heart's content (or should that be tummy's content?)!
Malakor, opposite Wat Ratburana, has an expansive menu of both local and international food. Try the spicy chicken! In a great location, with simple décor, great good, and at a reasonable price, Malakor makes the most of your dining experience. Choose to sit on the outdoor balcony, or find your own secret nook in the wooden, fan cooled building. Big on atmosphere, friendliness, and a fabulous time.
The Pludhaya Resort & Spa, east of the station, has an exotic Thai menu served in an open air dining restaurant. Overlooking the gorgeous lagoon, or hiding away inside in the lovely air conditioned comfort, you may dine from 11:00 am to 9:30 pm every day.
Suan Rim Nam Restaurant has the ambience to welcome everyone. The food tastes great, but the music cannot be beaten. At a cheap price, the cashew chicken will match the atmosphere and experience.
The Leelawadee Restaurant, part of the Lima Place Hotel, creates an open door terrace ambience with a traditional Thai menu. The modern décor combined with the authentic cuisine provides a uniquely contrasting dining experience. Open from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm daily.
The Ban Watcharachai Restaurant can be found on the bank of the Chao Phraya River. With traditional Thai food and reasonable prices, enjoy your meal whilst taking in the lovely view of the Suriyothai Monument.
The Ayothaya Restaurant (attached to the Ayothaya Hotel and also known as the Tepanimit Restaurant) comes recommended by the Tourism Authority for great Thai, Chinese, and European cuisine. With a varied menu of superb flavours and fantastic chefs, and with music and entertainment until 1 am, enjoy the bright red interior and seating for 150 people. Check out the buffet, too!
Other restaurants to discover, as recommended by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, include for Thai food: the Ruen Thai Mai Suai, 200 metres from Wat Yai Chaimongkhon, and the Sai Thong River Restaurant on U-Thong Road. For a Chinese style experience, try Chai Nam Restaurant (also with Thai choices) again on U-Thong Road.
Whilst not specifically a restaurant, the Night Markets make for an excellent way to experience authentic Thai life and food. Purchase from the fresh product on display like seafood, meats, fruit, and vegetables. Or choose a meal from one of the stalls - be brave and try the fried insects. For those with less courage, definitely try the Pad Thai with corn pancakes for dessert. Absolutely the best place to eat for those on a budget, and for those looking for a unique, authentic, and happening experience.
Again, whilst not a specific restaurant, one of the best dining choices you may make specifies a cruise on the river. Discover the panoramic vision of Ayutthaya from dawn onwards. Floating restaurants create unique and flavoursome dining experiences! Choose from either the set menu option, or choose instead to pick from the a la carte menu. Prices generally include all meals and the boat rental. If you partake in a dinner cruise, your ride will leave the port between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm and the entire experience will last a magnificent two hours. Try the Kung Mae Nam Pao - otherwise known as grilled river kin prawn. A local speciality, it should be tried to be thoroughly enjoyed. Whilst you eat, enjoy the view of the peaceful and simple Thai life, surrounded by glorious architecture and ruins steeped in history.
